Have you ever searched for photographers on Google or Instagram? Then you know how overwhelming it can be! Even for me (as a photographer), it's hard to sort through everyone's info and pictures to choose who I’d like to hire!
Here are some things to look for to get you started. these 5 categories are similar and related but each photographer does them a little differently. Once you understand what you are looking at it will be easier to narrow down what you want!
Editing
Editing is how we process the photos after taking them. This is where the photographer's personal preference and style come in. Look at the way their look- Are they too dark or light for your taste? Are the colors super vibrant or dull, which do you like? Are they warm or cool in color?
Posing
The way the people are standing, holding their bodies, etc is connected to how the photographer set them up for that picture. Some do an unposed look which will look like a lot of candid moments. And some will do more posed and set up where every limb and body go.
Emotion
The emotion is very close to the posing. Look at the people’s faces. Do you want interaction/candid or smiling at the camera? What about laughter or more serious?
Communication
This is a big one! First, how they communicate with you from the first inquiry is a good sign of how they will continue to communicate during the whole process. But it also shows their personality and if you will enjoy working with them! If you are enjoying being around them then it will show in your photos!
Digital/prints
This is one area in the photography industry that I find the most confusing for those looking to book photos! Everyone does it a little differently but the main thing is knowing what’s included in the price they list you. Are you wanting digital, prints, or both? Are you expecting to pay for it all upfront or choose/order after?
